Polymer
All of Mary Rouse’s polymer designs are completely hand-formed using polymer clay. The intricate images are achieved using traditional techniques including millefiori cane making. This process is similar to that used by Venetian glassmakers and ancient Egyptian tile makers.
Each element of the design is constructed by inlaying the clay into three dimensional patterns within a cane or loaf. The image runs the length of the cane and is thinly sliced to achieve decorative beads and intricate shapes. The geometric, floral, and face images are constructed in this manner, and no paint is ever used.

The colorful, womanmade clay fires at low temperatures to result in a strong, lightweight, and durable item. Each piece is a unique work of art combining the artist’s interpretation with ancient techniques and contemporary materials.
Mary also creates Custom Designs for that special gift or special occasion.
You can learn to create your own polymer designs by registering for classes at the Noon Whistle Pottery (please see the Special Events for details) or by forming a group of 6-8 craft enthusiasts (10 and older) to meet at The Rouse House. Birthday party entertainment may be arranged. The 6--8 participants make beads for about an hour, then go eat while the beads bake. The beads are then delivered to string on leather and wear home as a lasting memento. This is especially appealing to teenage girls, but adults also enjoy it. Please Contact Mary at least six weeks in advance to make arrangements.
